TR In The Community

While reading this series, individual will learn about different types of Therapeutic Recreation Programs within the community. Individual will be able to recognize the therapeutic process within community programs. Individual will be able to understand more about small and large nonprofits that provide therapeutic services.

  • Learner will also take a multiple choice exam at the end of course based on course with a passing score of 70% or higher within 365 days of starting course

Instructor Bio:

Kathryn Groiss grew up in a small town in NorthEastern, PA. The oldest of 5, she always had the need to care for people and ability to facilitate fun and games. She graduated with a bachelors degree in Recreation Management with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. She moved to Colorado to complete her degree through her field study internship at Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center. She then moved to warmer weather in 2011 to sunny South Carolina and was the first Recreaation Therapist to start her own TR program in a long term care rehab facility. She worked in the medical field for 5 years running activity programs for geriatrics in short term rehab and long term care. She switched gears in 2015 and started working in the community with adults with special needs. She continues to work full time with adults with special needs through Recreation, education and volunteering as well as with a non profit, HEART Artist Guild and Theatre Company for adults with special needs. She lives in Mount Pleasant, SC with her husband, Hank, her son, Henry, and 2 dogs, Ozzy and Peko.
