Sensory Room Experience: Part 2

*This course has been pre-approved by NCTRC for 5 clock hours.

In this course students will learn how to determine if a sensory space or room is needed for their organization. Students will learn how to incorporate a sensory room or experience into one’s scope of practice as well as gain knowledge about creating the policies and procedures associated with a sensory room. The questions one should be asking before staring the process is shared as well as resources on equipment purchasing and creative budget friendly ideas. At the end of the course, the student will need to pass a quiz with a score of 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.

Course Objectives

  • The student will be able to identify the key components to building a sensory room vs. a sensory experience; including planning, budgeting, equipment and policies and procedures

  • The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the effective utilization of a sensory room for positive participant outcomes

  • The student will be able to identify resources to equip a sensory room

Instructor Bio:

Jessica Tischler has her Master’s of Education in Therapeutic Recreation from Temple University and is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with over 12 years of experience in the community recreation setting, including social and recreational programming, summer camps, and adaptive sports and fitness. She also has experience working PRN as a Recreation Therapist for an acute psychiatric hospital. She currently works as the Inclusion & Disability Services Director for a community center--supervising staff, providing accommodations, and building programming. Jessica has recently started her own business, Quality Inclusion Consulting Services, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all by giving organizations the knowledge and tools to become more inclusive, accessible, and a place of belonging for people of all abilities.
