Recreational Therapy After A Stroke

*This course has been pre-approved by NCTRC for 5 clock hours.

This course will explore how recreation therapists can be a vital part of rehabilitation from strokes. This course will introduce the different types of strokes, risk factors, and the symptoms of strokes, how to address the residual effects of strokes, recreational therapy goals and potential recreation interventions for stroke patients. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 70%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will understand what a stroke is and know the difference between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

  • Participants will understand the effects strokes can have on the body.

  • Participants will be able to create patient centered RT goals for stroke patients.

  • Participants will be able to list new leisure activities and adaptive techniques for stroke patients.

Jordan Piwowar, CTRS

Instructor Bio:

Jordan graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation in 2017. During the last semester of undergraduate, she completed an internship at Michigan Medicine, an inpatient rehabilitation facility, working with adults with strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. Jordan became a certified recreational therapist in 2018. After getting certified she continued her role at the inpatient rehabilitation working with adults who have experienced strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and general debility. She is currently the host of a local Stroke Support Group, manages therapy dog teams in the rehabilitation facility, and facilitates a weekly karaoke group for her patients. Jordan has a love and passion for physical medicine and rehabilitation. She has 5+ experience working with people with strokes and other physical disabilities in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.
