Outdoor Program Planning for People With Disabilities

*This course has been pre-approved by NCTRC for 5 clock hours.

This course is designed for the Recreation Therapist who wants to plan their first outdoor program catered to individuals with disabilities. This course will guide you in the steps to develop a strong and safe program. Additional skill building in the course will include information on hiring staff, hosting volunteers, managing them and mitigating risk. The participant must pass a quiz with at least 70% to be awarded the completion certificate within 365 days of taking the course.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course participant will be able to identify the 6 W’s to planning an outdoor program

  • By the end of this course participant will be able to identify three ways to manage risk in programming

  • By the end of this course participant will be able to identify the three therapeutic benefits of outdoor programming

  • By the end of this course participant will be able to identify identify at least three operational items to utilize in programming

  • By the end of this course participant will be able to identify a minimum of three interventions that can be utilized by the CTRS during programs

Instructor Bio:

Diana is the owner & Founder of Your Adventure Rx offering outdoor therapeutic recreation based in Bozeman, Montana. She has planned and led outdoor programs for many national adaptive sports organizations such as Eagle Mount, Disable Sports Eastern Sierra and Telluride Adaptive programs and planned multi-day adventure program for large corporations including Altria. For 15 years she’s been practicing recreation therapy and lives, works and plays in the outdoors. Her other certifications include: Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) in alpine and adaptive ski teaching and in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
