Working In Corrections As A Recreational Therapist

*This course has been pre-approved by NCTRC for 5 clock hours.

This course explores what it's like to work in a correctional facility as a Recreational Therapist. Students will learn the value RT's provide through designing and delivering treatment interventions as well as the difficulties they may encounter along the way. This course takes a look into what the current prison system is like such as the populations served, routines of the facility and the benefits of working in this type of setting. Students will also gain an understanding of the safety protocols and what types of RT supplies would be appropriate for this type of environment. There is room for improvement and change in the corrections system for those inspired and ambitious enough to do it. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 70%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Individuals will be able to identify 3 benefits to working in Corrections.

  • Individuals will be able to identify 3 RT group interventions that are appropriate for Corrections.

  • Individuals will be able to identify 3 ways in which they can maintain safety while working in Corrections.

Instructor Bio:

Krystal has a bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation and has been a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS) since 2010 along with obtaining a master’s degree in Educational Psychology in 2014. She graduated with each of her degrees from Eastern Michigan University. She has experience working with children and adults (women and men) in inpatient psych and the prison system while living in Michigan. Currently she is working in a forensic mental health Hospital for the State of California as a Supervising Recreational Therapist. Krystal has a strong passion for advocating and helping to educate others on how wonderful it is to be a Recreational Therapist.
