Working In A Forensics Hospital As A Recreational Therapist

*This course has been pre-approved by NCTRC for 5 clock hours.

This course explores what it’s like to work in a Forensic Hospital as a Recreational Therapist. Participants will learn the various legal commitment codes that are treated in these facilities and the value RT’s provide through treatment interventions and educational/vocational opportunities. This course looks at the types of treatment services offered in this setting and the importance of safety and security behind these walls.  At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 70%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify what a Forensic Hospital is, and the types of patients served in these facilities.

  • Participants will identify 3 ways Forensic Hospitals enforce extra safety measures in their facilities to protect both patients and staff.

  • Participants will be able to identify at least 5 different treatment interventions that can be used in a Forensic Hospital.

  • Participants will be able to identify at least 4 different ways to motivate the unmotivated patient.

Instructor Bio:

Krystal has a bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation and has been a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS) since 2010 along with obtaining a master’s degree in Educational Psychology in 2014. She graduated with each of her degrees from Eastern Michigan University. She has experience working with children and adults (women and men) in inpatient psych and the prison system while living in Michigan. Currently she is working in a forensic mental health Hospital for the State of California as a Supervising Recreational Therapist. Krystal has a strong passion for advocating and helping to educate others on how wonderful it is to be a Recreational Therapist.
